Yulian Shpol (pseudonym of Mykhailo Yalovy) was a Ukrainian poet-futurist, writer and literary critic who belongs to the “Executed Renaissance” – an entire generation of Ukrainian artists whose lives were taken by the Soviet government in the 1930’s. This piano piece is an homage to him and an attempt to embody the spirit of his poetry in music. Shpol was executed among other 1111 victims on November 3d, 1937 in Sandarmokh, Russia. This “celebratory act” was organised by the Soviet authorities for the 20th Bolshevik revolution anniversary. The poem is both an epigraph to the piece and the main source of it’s essence and spirit; on the other hand, the music serves as a “translation” of the words into a more abstract language.
