’’THE LIST OF SUNKEN SHIPS’’ for mixed choir, narrator and cello (setting poetry by Serhii Zhadan)

Premiere info: October 2023. Performance by the National Music Academy students, conductor and commissioner – Yulia Grobelna. Cathedral of Christ’s Resurrection (Kyiv, Ukraine). Upcoming US premiere by the Cantori New York in March 2025.
This choral cycle uses 5 poems and prose excerpts from a poetry book ’’The Catalogue of Ships’’ by a living Ukrainian poet Serhii Zhadan. ’’The list of ships is a list of those who have left but who can not be forgotten. The list of names that follow you along your life. The list of cities where someone always waits for you.’’ For the poet, this book is a memory of long-ago peaceful Eastern Ukraine, a mournful tribute to his late father and a reflection on death, life and love. For the composer – a tender requiem for the loved ones who haven’t outlived the 2022 full-scale invasion by Russia.
