’’HE ONLY DREAMED OF PLACES NOW…’’ for 7 instruments (after E. M. Hemingway)
Premiere info: December 2022. Performance by the Ukho Ensemble Kyiv, conductor – Luigi
Gaggero. Theaterhaus Stuttgart (Stuttgart, Germany). Commissioned by the InterAKT Initiative.
’’He no longer dreamed of storms, nor of women, nor of great occurrences, nor of great fish, nor
fights, nor contests of strength, nor of his wife. He only dreamed of places now and of the lions on
the beach’’ (from “The Old Man and the Sea” by E. Hemingway).
This one-movement piece for 7 instruments was inspired by the mentioned above book – a
novella by Ernest Hemingway, which has gotten him the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the Nobel
Prize in Literature. The short masterpiece (also being Hemingway’s last published work) was
written on the cutting edge of the post-WW2 society and became a symbol of faith in humanity
and its purpose.
The musical material aims to embody an “enchanted state”, a “state of stillness” and a
“sense of movement within the stillness” as indicated in the score.
